Campaign to Reject the European Commission

Gordon Brown’s refusal of a referendum on the E.U. Reform Treaty (Lisbon Treaty) means that only H.M. The Queen can now stop it.

CREC has revived its successful ‘purple postcard’ campaign which was widely credited with helping to persuade Tony Blair in May 2004 to concede a referendum on the E.U. Constitution.

3½ years later, Gordon Brown, on 13 December, signed the E.U. Reform Treaty in Lisbon. As all European leaders except Gordon Brown agree, it is a virtual carbon copy of the E.U Constitution, with over 99% of its wording exactly the same as in the E.U. Constitution. It is the E.U. Constitution by another name. We were promised a referendum on it by Tony Blair. Now Gordon Brown is refusing it. He says Parliament alone will decide.

The idea of the purple postcards campaign is simple. The front of the card carries a simple message: “No European Constitution without a Referendum”. The back of the card carries an appeal to the Queen, which we invite people to sign, date and post to the Queen (if you want to see the artwork, please contact us, see below).

A special feature of our campaign is that every single card has a unique serial number. This enables us to track the numbers of cards being posted. In 2003 and 2004, 175,000 British people sent postcards to the Queen. At the height of our campaign, around 1,000 cards a day were being received at Buckingham Palace. CREC was informed by the Queen’s Correspondence Secretary in 2003 that the Queen was being kept informed on a regular basis of the actual numbers being received. As to whether she ever mentioned our campaign to Tony Blair, we can only speculate.

The wording of our appeal to the Queen is at the end of this message. The Queen is the ultimate protector of our Constitution, which guarantees our political independence. In the event of a conflict between Parliament and the people, which now appears to be the case, she must side with her people.

WORDING OF THE APPEAL TO THE QUEEN:

Your Majesty,

I appeal to you to defend and uphold the British Constitution, as you promised us in your Coronation Oath. I urge you to refuse your Royal Assent to any Bill to enact the E.U. Reform Treaty, unless we, the British people, have first been allowed to have our say in a fair referendum. You promised to govern us according to our laws and customs. The Bill of Rights 1689 states that we should never be ruled by ‘foreign powers’.

In 2004, after large numbers of Britons petitioned both you and your government, Tony Blair promised us a referendum on the European Constitution. As nearly all European and British leaders agree, the E.U. Reform Treaty is a virtual carbon copy of the European Constitution, with around 99% of its wording the same as four years ago.

This Treaty will bring in a European government. Britain would be forced to accept a European foreign and defence policy, including an E.U. army and paramiltary units with the right to operate on our soil. Precious rights such as the presumption of innocence and trial by jury will no longer be guaranteed. Under the Treaty, the E.U. will have power to further remove what independence we have left, without our consent. You may by convention have to follow government advice when giving Royal Assent, but, equally, the government must not give you unconstitutional advice.
