C O N S T I T U T I O N - Revised 28 June 2008
1. The Campaign to Reject the European Commission (formerly the Campaign for a Referendum on the European Constitution) (CREC) shall be an unincorporated association and is hereinafter called: âCRECâ.
2. Aims and Objects
The aims and objects of CREC shall be:
(a) to educate the people of the United Kingdom about the benefits of keeping
their existing Constitution.
(b) to educate the people of the United Kingdom about the disadvantages of the United Kingdom remaining a member of the European Union
(c) to educate the people of the United Kingdom about the dangers which could flow from their becoming re-designated citizens of the European Union and who could therefore become liable to any duties imposed by that Union
(d) to enable the people of the United Kingdom to express their views on issues relating to the European Union by means of referendums
(e) to co-operate with all other individuals and organisations sharing the same
objective(s).
3. Powers
CREC shall for the purpose of advancing its aims and objects have all such
powers as its Committee or its General Meetings shall from time to time decide.
4. Membership
(a) Membership shall be open to all who support the aims and objects of CREC
as set out in Paragraph 2 above.
(b) The Committee shall have power to decline membership to an individual without giving a reason, and shall have the power to withdraw a personâs membership for conduct which brings CREC into disrepute. A person whose membership is withdrawn shall have the right of appeal to the Committee.
(c) The initial membership fee shall be ÂŁ5, which shall entitle the member to membership of CREC until further notice.
(d) The Committee reserves the right, however, to call on members for further membership fees should that prove necessary.
5. Committee
(a) The members shall elect a Committee to run CREC.
(b) An Annual General Meeting shall be held on or before 31 December 2003, and annually thereafter.
(c) At each Annual Meeting, the following shall be elected, in sequence:
Chairman
Vice-Chairman
Secretary
Treasurer
3 other Committee Members.
(d) The Committee shall have power (i) to replace any Officer or Committee member if the post or position becomes vacant for whatever reason (ii) to dismiss an Officer or Committee Member for conduct which brings CREC into disrepute (iii) to co-opt up to 3 additional Committee members and (iv) to apply to the Charity Commission for charitable status.
(e) The quorum for the Committee shall be 3 members.
(f) Committee decisions will be by majority vote with the Chairman, or acting Chairman, of the Committee having a casting vote which s/he must exercise in favour of the status quo where applicable.
(g) The Committee shall have the power to pay expenses, employ staff, open bank or Building Society Accounts, buy or rent accommodation, appoint Trustees and form sub-committees.
6. Annual and Special General Meetings
(a) The Annual General Meeting shall be called by the Secretary giving all members at least 21 daysâ notice of the time and place.
(b) Any member may move any resolution at the Annual or at a Special General Meeting.
(c) The Chairman and Treasurer shall present reports at the Annual General Meeting.
(d) One tenth of the membership, or the Committee, may requisition a Special General Meeting, giving the reason they wish to hold such a meeting, again giving 21 daysâ notice (in the case of one tenth of the membership, such notice to be given to the Secretary).
(e) All decisions at General Meetings, including any motion to amend this Constitution, shall be by simple majority vote, with the Chairman or acting Chairman of the Meeting having a casting vote which s/he must exercise in favour of the status quo where appropriate.
7. Dissolution
Should CREC be dissolved for whatever reason, the Committee shall pay any
remaining funds into any other organisation which supports the principle that the
United Kingdom should be able to govern itself.
